Alaska offshore oil production
Commercial production began with a 1902 oilfield in region long known for its natural oil seeps. The boom came in 1957. Alaska’s petroleum history began long before statehood in 1959 and a headline-making major oilfield discovery two years earlier. A proposed Arctic offshore oil development project by Hilcorp Energy would entail building a 24-acre island in 19 feet of water to access a field of oil containing 330 million barrels of oil that could reach peak production of 70,000 barrels per day. If developed, the facility would be the first oil and gas production facility in federal waters off Alaska. Hilcorp proposes to build a nine-acre artificial gravel island in the shallow waters of the Beaufort Sea, about 20 miles east of Prudhoe Bay and about five miles off the coast. Offshore Drilling And Potential Impacts On Alaska The topic of developing oil prospects in Alaska by offshore drilling concerns of damaging the Arctic environment and the marine life in many ways. The consequences of an oil spill are waters off Alaska are not only financial but oceanic. After years of arguments over drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR), the debate about Arctic oil exploration has moved offshore, into the waters of the Chukchi and Beaufort seas.

Prudhoe Bay Oil Field is a large oil field on Alaska's North Slope. It is the largest oil field in North America, covering 213,543 acres and originally containing approximately 25 billion barrels of oil. The amount of recoverable oil in the field is more than double that of the next largest field in the United States, the East Texas oil field. The field is operated by BP; partners are ExxonMobil and ConocoPhillips Alaska. Crude oil production quantities are estimated by state and summed to the PADD and the U.S. level. State production estimates reported by EIA are normally different from data reported by state agencies. For example, production estimates for Texas reported on table 26 are different from production reported by the Railroad Commission of Texas. Alaska’s North Slope has produced more than 18 billion barrels of oil since the discovery of the Prudhoe Bay oil field. Oil production has been the engine of economic growth in Alaska. Hilcorp to raise Milne Point field's oil production in Alaska Anchorage — Hilcorp Energy will increase oil production to 40,000 b/d at the Milne Point field on Alaska's North Slope by the end of 2020, a company official said Tuesday, compared with 34,000 b/d currently. Alaskan Onshore Energy Alaska‘s North Slope accounted for 25 percent of U.S. domestic oil and natural gas production in 1988, but production has plummeted because the government has largely prevented exploration for new resources. Total North Slope production fell to approximately 540,000 barrels per day in 2014, a 75 percent decrease from 1988.
